UPDATE: Watch Bobby Weir and the Chew Toys Make Debut at Sound Summit

Thanks to Deadheadland Films for all the great footage from the Bobby and Chew Toys debut concert. During “Not Fade Away” you can see Jay Lane race onto the stage at the :30 mark and hop behind the drums. This made for the first official song of Bobby and the Chew Toys.

Deadheadland Films also grabbed some great footage of Bobby sitting in with Grace Potter on “Friend of the Devil.”

Bob Weir announced earlier in the summer that he is teaming up with Jay Lane and Don Was for a new project dubbed Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. In another surprise announcement, Weir’s appearance at the annual Sound Summit was to be part of a RatDog reunion of sorts. Bob Weir linked up with drummer Jay Lane and bassist Robin Sylvester yesterday at Sound Summit playing under the moniker “Bobby and the Chew Toys.”

Weir, who has been mostly resting since Dead & Co’s tour officially ended at LOCKN’ in August, looks and sounds great. Among the tunes that the Chew Toys played was Little Feat’s “Easy to Slip.”

Bobby has jammed at the Sound Summit in the past in the couple of years. Two years ago, Bobby sat-in with Wilco and last year Weir sat-in with My Morning Jacket front-man Jim James.

Check out Bobby sitting-in yesterday with the legendary Herbie Hancock for some good old fashioned funk.

Listen to Jim James’ Amazing Solo Set with Special Guest Bob Weir at Sound Summit – 9/9/2017 Full Show AUD

Before Phil Lesh and Bob Weir welcomed Jim James to the stage at Sound Summit this weekend, James had a solo set of his own. And the set was magnificent.

James ran through originals, My Morning Jacket Songs, covers and of course, Dead songs. Eric Johnson, the multi-instrumentalist, and Fruit Bats lead man who was performing as part of Vetiver earlier in the day, joined James for a number of songs on stage including a cover of the Fruit Bats’ “Wild Honey.”

At the end of the set, Bob Weir came out for a few tunes marking the second time James and Weir shared the stage in as many days. The first song they performed was written by Daniel Lanois but made popular by the Dave Matthews Band—”The Maker.”

Bob also performed the Grateful Dead classic “Brokedown Palace” and “For What It’s Worth.”

Front Row: Watch Jim James Join Bob Weir and Phil Lesh’s Brilliant Set at Sound Summit – 9/9/2017 Full Show Video

Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, two of the most prominent remaining founding of the Grateful Dead will share the stage from time to time these days, but it’s a rare occasion. Bob has been busy with his Campfire Band and Dead and Company while Phil has been busy grooming his Terrapin Family Band to bring the music to generations to come.

After Bob’s sit-in with Phil at LOCKN’ this year, Weir teamed up with his old bandmate just a few weeks later at Sound Summit. The annual celebration of and fundraiser for Mount Tamalpais State Park has become one of the musical highlights of the fall. In addition to Phil Lesh and Friends featuring Bob Weir, Jim James from My Morning Jacket was also on the bill among other acts.

Watch Bob Weir Join Wilco for “California Stars” and “Tomorrow Never Knows” Encore at Sound Summit 2016

To kick off the set, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh launched into the ever-illusive acoustic “Dark Star.” Bobby lead Dead and Company in an acoustic “Dark Star” this summer and I guess Phil wanted a part of that action.

As “Dark Star” continued, some more of Phil’s friends took the stage including Ross James and Holly Bowling came out to join the fun. After “Dark Star,” the band launched into a lengthy “Playin’ in the Band.”

About in hour into the set, Jim James came out to sit-in with Phil, Bobby and the rest of the band for “Tennessee Jed.”

The band closed the set with a rockin’ “One More Saturday Night” before taking their bow.

Watch Bob Weir Join Wilco for “California Stars” and “Tomorrow Never Knows” Encore at Sound Summit

So you’re at a rocking Wilco show at the beautiful Mountain Theater at Mount Tamalpais State Park in Northern California. Wilco just laid down a 24 song set and is coming out for an encore. How could this get any better? Bob Weir comes out and sits-in on “California Stars” and the badass Beatles cover “Tomorrow Never Knows”, that’s how.

For the third song of the Wilco’s encore at the Sound Summit festival last week, Bob Weir popped out of nowhere to sit in with the band for “California Stars” and “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

Wilco and Bobby aren’t strangers. They have collaborated before on both of these songs and recorded a live version of “St. Stephen” for the Day of the Dead project.

Watch fantastic footage of both songs courtesy of YouTuber Rick Coven.
