Listen to Marcus King and Billy Strings Shred on the Dead, Phish, and Neil Young at Rooster Walk – 5/26/2019 AUD

The annual Rooster Walk music festival was held at Pop’s Farm in Martinsville, VA this past Memorial Day Weekend. The three day festival was headlined by Galactic and the Marcus King Band among other acts.

The most anticipated set of the weekend took the closing spot on Sunday night on the main stage. Billy Strings and Marcus King have teamed up at past Rooster Walks as King and Strings and put on some epic performances.

Last year, King and Strings jammed on classic covers from Black Sabbath and Howlin Wolf among others. To open the set, Marcus and Billy reprised their beautiful cover of “Summertime” that they did at Carter Vintage Guitars.

After a few songs, King and Strings dived into some classic covers including Neil Young’s “Down By the River,” Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” Phish’s “Funky Bitch,” Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon,” and Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” among others.

Listen to Marcus King and Billy String Rocks Rooster Walk – 5/25/2018 Full Show AUD

Rooster Walk, a benefit festival head annually in honor of two high school friends who died tragically in their 20s, kicked off their 10th festival this last weekend in Martinsville, Virginia. Rooster Walk 10 had quite the line-up, boasting acts like J.J. Grey and Mofro, Marcus King Band, The Wood Brothers and more. One of the coolest sets of the festival was Billy Strings teaming up with Marcus King for a ‘King and Strings’ set.

The ‘King and Strings’ set was nestled into Friday’s evening line-up and got the weekend started off right. Billy, an up and comer in the bluegrass scene was well versed in the same catalogue that was familiar to King. The two crushed classic rock songs like “Sweat Leaf,” “Can’t You See,” “Hurts Me Too” and many more.

Based on this single performance, ‘King and Strings’ is definitely a road worthy act.

Listen to Marcus King and Greensky Bluegrass Honor Gregg Allman with “One Way Out” at Rooster Walk – 5/27/2016 Full Show AUD

There have been no shortages of tributes and covers honoring the legendary Gregg Allman who pass away last week. Phil Lesh performed “Midnight Rider” at the Cap, while Bob Weir and Jon Mayer delivered an emotional “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” in Gregg’s memory.

As festival kicks into high-gear, I’m sure we’ll see plenty more tributes. Last weekend, at Rooster Walk in Axton, VA, headliner Greensky Bluegrass invited future guitar legend Marcus King for a bluegrass-infused cover of the Allman Brothers classic “One Way Out.” The break-neck tempo put a unique twist on the tune and was a nice way to pay tribute to Gregg.

Marcus stayed out for one more tune before Greensky Bluegrass continued the rest of their set. Joey Porter, the keyboardist for the funk outfit Motet, came out for a couple of tunes as well including a cover of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved.”
