Iconic rockers, The Band, played their last show 40 years ago and it was a star-studded event. Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Neil Young and Eric Clapton were just a few of the many musicians that performed at the The Last Waltz, 40 years ago.
Warren Haynes, along with a cast of musicians including Michael McDonald, Jamey Johnson, John Medeski, Don Was, Terence Higgins, Bob Margolin, Dave Malone, Mark Mullins and Ivan Neville have embarked on a tour entitled The Last Waltz 40. As the original Last Waltz did, Warren and company and have started to pick up some friends along the way. Last week, Joan Osborne joined the tour for a few songs, including an incredible “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.”
Last night at the Palace Theater in Albany, another guest joined the tour—original The Band member, Garth Hudson. Garth may be 79 years old, but he can still play the keys with the best of them. While most of the footage shows Garth hunched behind the organ, he does glance over at the other musicians and shoot them a huge smile. You get the sense that not only are Warren and the mother musicians honored to play with Garth, but Hudson feels extremely honored to be celebrating the music that he created nearly half a century ago.
Thanks to our 2016 taper of the year, Sean Roche for grabbing a ton of footage from the historic guest appearance including the above “I Shall Be Released.” Sean’s footage gives you the most authentic experience of being at the show with bobbing heads and all 😉
