Watch Gov’t Mule’s “Mule Jam > Afro Blue” at Island Exodus 13

Gov’t Mule’s annual Island Exodus returned for a thirteenth time this past January with one very big difference—no Warren Haynes. Uncle Warren was sick and sidelined for the Jamaica getaway.

When word got out that Warren wasn’t able to fulfill his obligations, plenty of guitar slingers jumped in to keep the Mule train forging ahead including John Scofield and Jackie Greene among others. To open the final night of Island Exodus, the Mule opened with a rollicking “Mule” jam that segued into “Afro Blue” before settling into a great cover of James Brown’s
“Doing it to Death.”

Gov’t Mule has made their was to Jamaica for Island Exodus 13. Well, almost all of the Mule has made it. Due to illness, doctors are having Warren sit this adventure out. The community rallied around the Mule and showed up to Jamaica in spades.

Mule was joined by Anders Osborne, Jimmy Vivino, Jackie Greene, Barry Oakley Jr, & Jeff Sipe on January 15th. Watch their soaring cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer.”

Watch Gov’t Mule Cover Radiohead’s “Lucky” at Island Exodus 11

New Year’s Eve celebrations usually give way to once in a lifetime excursions in January. Unfortunately, we only have archival footage to keep us this warm this year. Although Dr. Fauci shared some very encouraging news for live music fans today—”If everything goes right, [concerts] is will [return] some time in the fall of 2021. So that by the time we get to the early to mid-fall, you can have people feeling safe performing onstage as well as people in the audience … I think you can then start getting back to almost full capacity of seating. We’ll be back in the theaters — performers will be performing, audiences will be enjoying it. It will happen.”

One of the January jam getaways that happens annually is Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus in Jamaica. Last year, the Mule invited My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel to cover Radiohead’s classic tune “Lucky.”

If things go accordingly to plan, we could see an Island Exodus 12 in 2022. Thanks to TonyFranciosi for the footage of Island Exodus 11 to hold us over until next year.

Watch Warren Haynes and Anders Osborne Destroy “Cortez the Killer” at Island Exodus IV

Warren Haynes, the hardest working man in Rock and Roll, turned 60 years young today. The former Allman Brothers Band member, has created a legacy for himself as one of our generations greatest guitarists.

YouTuber illuminatedrose dug into their archive to celebrate Uncle Warren’s milestone birthday today. The footage comes from 2013 at Gov’t Mule’s annual Island Exodus. At Island Exodus IV, Mule and Warren were joined by Ron Holloway, Hook Herrera and Anders Osborne. During Anders Osborne’s set at the mid point of the festival, Warren and Mule’s keyboardist Danny Louis joined Osborne for a jaw-dropping 26 minute version of “Cortez the Killer.” Warren has been known to jam on the Neil Young classic from time to time, but this was something extraordinary.

Listen to Warren Haynes’ Intimate “Q and Play” at Island Exodus 11 – 1/21/2020 AUD

Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule wrapped up their 11th annual Island Exodus in Jamaica last month. The four day, five night escape was highlighted by three Gov’t Mule shows.

In between the Mule shows, there was plenty of music and activities to keep the Famuley satisfied. On Tuesday afternoon, Warren reprised a “Q and Play” set, that according to Haynes was a terrible disaster last year.

A “Q and Play” box stationed on the resort solicited questions for Warren to answer during the set. In between the nine songs he crooned on, Warren answered a collection of questions from the box.

In addition to answering questions during the set, Warren invited a few friends to jam with him on stage including Cody Dickinson, Carl Broemel, Tyler Ramsey, and Luther Dickinson. During the set, Warren debuted a pair of tunes and ended with the Allman Brothers Band classic “Melissa.”
