Grace Slick, Jefferson Starship and 60,000 fans took over Central Park on this day in 1975. Starship performed a free concert for what Grace Slick said looked like “800 million people.”
Jefferson Starship ended their show with a raw and visceral performance of their hit “Somebody to Love.” The radio-friendly track took on a totally different personality when performed live.
Central Park almost didn’t survive the performance. Jefferson Starship and concert sponsor, were forced to pay $14,000 for cleaning up and damage done to the park after the concert.
