Watch Phish Close Out Nashville Set With “Split Open and Melt”

Phish returned to Ascend Amphitheater, in Nashville for night two last night. While night one was good, night two was one of the best of the tours.

The second set of the show was arguably the strongest of the tour. The epic set ended with a stellar “Split Open and Melt.”

Phish finished their second show at Ascend Amphitheater last night which marks the halfway point of their mini-fall tour. The two remaining stop for the P-fish this fall include three nights in Chicago and a four-night run at the MGM Grand in Vegas starting on Halloween.

Like other shows this tour, the first was HOT. “2001” made an early appearance last night and went into a dark “555.” The first set ended with a strong “Maze” into a monster “Bathtub Gin.”

The second set saw an awesome “Scents and Subtle Sounds” into “No Men in No Man’s Land.” The second set ended strong with a “Boogie on Reggae Woman” and “Harry Hood.”

Trey quoted Soul Planet in 2001. Trey teased Call to the Post at the end of Bathtub Gin. DWD was unfinished. Scents did not contain the intro and included Run Through the Jungle and Crosseyed teases and quotes and Party Time quotes. Antelope also included Crosseyed teases and quotes.

Listen to Phish Drop Their 500th “Mike’s Song” in Nashville – 10/23/2018 Full Show AUD

After a monster run in Hampton, Phish turned their sites on Nashville for a pair of dates at the Ascend Amphitheater. After tonight’s show in Nashville, Phish will be halfway through their fall tour.

Phish started getting hot just at the crisp autumn air set in at the outdoor amphitheater. A first set “Tweezer Reprise” opener got things started off the right way. “Wolfman’s Brother” is also a highlight of the first set.

The big news of the night was that the second set “Mike’s Song” opener marked the 500th time Phish has played the song. “Mike’s Song” joins YEM and “Possum” in the 500 Club. For the record, as of 10/23/2018 this is what Phish.net lists as the top ten most played Phish songs are:

Instant Classic: Listen to Gov’t Mule & Friends Pay Tribute to Allen Woody in Nashville – 8/26/2017 Full Show AUD

Gov’t Mule, specifically Warren Haynes, is no stranger to losing friends. After an emotional roller coaster this year from losing Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman, among others, Gov’t Mule reopened old wounds over the weekend at their show in Nashville. August 26th marked the 17th anniversary of Allman Brothers Band bassist and Gov’t Mule founding member, Allen Woody. The Mule wouldn’t let the day go by without drawing attention to their fallen brother.

Just as they did last summer, Blackberry Smoke has opened for Gov’t Mule a few shows this summer include the Nashville gig.

Things started to get interesting about halfway through the set. The first surprise of the set was former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and guitarist Audley Freed for the Crowes classic “Sometimes Salvation.”

Next up, former Allman Brothers Band guitarist and fellow bandmate of Haynes and Woody, Jack Pearson was welcomes to the stage for the dueling guitar masterpiece “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Mule closed the set out with another Allman Brothers Band original and Warren Haynes favorite, “Soulshine.”

For the encore, Warren welcomed back out Pearson and Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smoke for “Melissa > Mountain Jam > Melissa.” The encore was similar to what they played at the Peach festival just last weekend, but the cast of characters had changed.

Listen to Phish’s Second Nashville Show Including an Epic 6-Song Second Set – 10/19/2016 Full Show AUD

After Bobby playing with the band the night before, Phish had to pull something special out for the folks in Nashville for night 2.

After a solid first set, the boys dug deep for a jam-heavy second set that was only six songs. After you hear it you’ll understand why they didn’t need to play any more.

The highlight of the show was the Phish classic and phan favorite, Harry Hood. Trey and company explored new territory last night with this 22 year-old song. This is what makes Phish so special. After playing Harry Hood 366 times, they can find a new way to interpret it for the 367th time.
