Listen to the Allman Brothers Band Reunite in NYC as The Brothers – 3/10/2020 AUD

The Allman Brothers Band played their last gig in NYC at the Beacon Theatre on October 28th, 2014. While it’s only been a little over five years, so much has happened in the Allman Brothers community. Gregg and Butch have passed, Derek and Susan have been spreading their own brand of southern rock, Warren has continued to earn his moniker as the hardest working man in rock and Oteil has found a new calling with Dead and Company. One of the most exciting projects to happen in recent years are sons of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts (Devon Allman and Duane Betts) joining forces for a new era of Allman Brothers-inspired music and tours.

While so much has flourished from the ashes of the Allman Brothers Band, nothing really quite replaces the real thing. While both Gregg and Duane have passed and Dickey has opted out, the remaining members of Allman Brothers Band reunited last night in NYC to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band.

Despite the fear and spread of COVID-19, tens of thousands of fans made the pilgrimage to NYC to see ABB reunite for one evening. Instead of peakin’ at the Beacon, the Brothers decided to put on a huge celebration at Madison Square Garden.

Last night’s line-up included the loan remaining founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Jaimoe on drums, Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, Derek Trucks on guitar, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Marc Quinones on percussion, Chuck Leavell on grand piano and vocals, Duane Trucks on drums and Reese Wynans on keyboards.

While variations of the Brothers line-up have played over the years, the core hasn’t come together since the final ABB show back in 2014. Never the less, it didn’t take long for Warren, Derek, Oteil, Jaimoe and the rest of the Brothers to find their groove.

The evening was a sight to behold. Allman Brothers Band members and family, new and old jammed deep into the evening at MSG on the best of the best of the ABB catalogue. The Brothers treated fans to nearly 30 songs during the two sets and encore.

Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 5 years for another night of the Brothers summoning the spirit of ABB.

Listen to Marcus King and Karl Denson’s Dazzling “Liz Reed” at the Georgia Theater – 1/22/2019 Full Show AUD

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe just finished up a stretch of January gigs through the warmer half of the US. While in Georgia, Denson’s path passed another band on the run—the Marcus King Band.

About halfway through KDTU’s set, Marcus King came out for the entire second half of the set. King sat in on a total of seven tunes. Among the songs that Karl, Marcus and the band jammed on was the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”

Listen to Karl Denson’s ‘Eat a Bunch of Peaches’ Allman Brothers Tribute Tour Opener – 4/11/2018 Full Show AUD

Wind instrumentalist and funk maven, Karl Denson and his Tiny Universe kicked off a mini spring tour earlier this week in Atlanta. The tour is titled ‘Eat a Bunch of Peaches’ in reference to the Allman Brothers Band’s seminal album, ‘Eat a Peach’ and is a tribute to ABB’s musical catalogue.

The tour kicked off at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, GA, near Allman country and it was a treat for ABB and KDTU fans alike.

Highlights include a gorgeous “Melissa” and a filthy “Whipping Post” among many others. Looking forward to the rest of the ‘Eat a Bunch of Peaches’ tour!

Instant Classic: Listen to Warren Haynes, Oteil Burbridge, Eric Krasno and More Jam on the Dead and Allmans as the Days Between Band in New Orleans

Looking at the two incredible weekend line-ups of Jazz Fest in New Orleans only tells half the story of what this festival is all about. The half of the fun happens in the days in between the two weekends. One of the most magical concerts happened at the One Eyed Jacks and was aptly named the Daze Between Band. The starting line-up for the Daze Between Band reads like an all-star team: Eric Krasno on guitar, Otiel Burbridge on bass, Duane Trucks on drums, Jeff Sipe on drums, Scott Metzger on guitar, Danny Louis on keys, Nate Werth on percussion and Lyle Divinsky on vocals.

The set originally was to be dedicated to co-founding drummer of the Allman Brothers Band who left us earlier this year, Butch Trucks. With the tragic passing of Col. Bruce Hampton after the star-studded Hampton 70 birthday concert last week, it only felt right to dedicate the show to the two giants who nurtured and grew so many wonderful musicians in their shadows.

The super late night set was joined by a variety of guests including former Allman Brothers Band guitarist, Warren Haynes. Uncle Warren sat in with the Daze Between Band for the majority of the first set. Other guests included Oteil’s brother Kofi Burbridge on the flute and Ike Stubblefield on the keys among others.

Listen to Luther & Cody Dickinson Join Butch Truck’s Freight Train Band for an Epic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” at Wanee – 4/19/2017 Full Show AUD

Butch Trucks, one of the founding members of both the Allman Brothers Band and one of the premier jam band festivals every Spring/Summer, Wanee, was honored this past Wednesday at the opening of the festival. Wanee has managed to start their festival on Wednesday and kicked off the 5-day festival with one hell of a tribute to the iconic ABB drummer who passed away earlier this year.

Butch’s last band was The Freight Train Band. Luther and Cody Dickinson from the North Mississippi Allstars joined the massive Freight Train Band on Wednesday night for a rockin’ set of Allman tunes and a couple of covers.

One of the highlights of the set came at the end with Luther leading the band in a 20 minute plus rendition of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Luther is no stranger to the Allman classic. Check out a “Liz Reed” for the ages that he performed with Tedeschi Trucks Band last year at the Beacon.

Butch is survived by his two kids, Vaylor and Melody who played in the the Freight Train Band as well. What a wonderful way to celebrate Butch’s life and music and to kick-off Wanee!
