Phish’s run in Mexico has come to an end and there are only rumored tour dates in the future, but Lazy Lightning has come to the rescue with some awesome archival 4k footage.
Phish kicked off their annual run at Dick’s Sporting Good Park in Commerce City, CO with a legendary gag. A Rolling Stone readers polled was [clears throat] phucked with to place the rarity “Lushington” as the number one Phish song of all time. Phish ran with it and spelled out “L-U-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N” with their first ten songs of the opening set followed by “Ha ha” and an awesome “Suzy Greenberg” with horns featuring Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet and Natalie Cressman on trombone.
Phans were treated to the real treat in the second set. Phish busted out what some refer to as the big “Simple” that clocks in at 22 minutes. “Simple” use to be a Phish favorite to jam on, but rarely gets this kind of treatment in recent years.
Here is what Phish.net has to say about the big “Simple”:
The Rhythm Department gets the credit for propelling this jam beyond the standard and into a rocking and increasingly euphoric groove that recalls several standout ’96 versions. Then Fish, Page and Mike drive the jam into a funky and rhythmic realm.
The “Simple” contained a “Magilla” tease from Page and as well as a “San-Ho-Zay” tease from Trey.
Thanks again to Lazy Lightning for bringing some archival Phish back to us.
This is definitely a highlight of the Phish 3.0 era. While this jam did the get an official release from Phish, it’s cool to see LL’s 4k footage and the superb audience recording.
