Watch Joe Russo and Tom Hamilton Join Bob Weir for “Not Fade Away” Encore in Philly

Bob Weir and his band made their way across the country for a show last night at the Tower Theater. Philly was treated to two sets of Dead and tunes off of Weir’s new album, Blue Mountain.

If you recall, John Mayer sat in with JRAD last weekend in Brooklyn. Then Mayer made his way out west to join Bobby for five songs in LA. Now it was JRAD’s turn to sit in with Bob on the east coast. Confused? Just listen to the music play.

For the encore last night in Philly, Bob welcomed Joe Russo and Tom Hamilton from Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (among a zillion other projects they are involved in) for “Not Fade Away.”

While its just one song, this is a little glimpse of what we have in store for Los Muertos Con Queso in January.

The John Mayer sit-in set, the acoustic sets on the bowling lanes, the 27 minute “Terrapin Station Suite” – there are so many highlights from JRAD’s run at the Brooklyn Bowl last weekend.

Phil Lesh and a special line-up of friends took over Coney Island last night for the first of two shows. The cast of friends included some familiar faces like Jackie Greene and Eric Krasno. Karl Denson, who has jammed with Phil recently on the west coast, also joined in on the fun last night. The rhythm brothers from Soulive, Neal and Alan Evans and Jason Crosby rounded out the line-up.

Denson’s contribution on the saxophone and flute give the music a whole new dimension. Jackie Greene and Eric Krasno on dueling guitars make for a great night of Dead music on a beautiful night down on the boardwalk.

First Listen: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Live at Higher Ground, South Burlington – 2/14/2016 Soundboard Matrix

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead—possibly the best Dead cover band ever, at Higher Ground, sold out show—sounds like a perfect Valentine’s Day to me.

JRAD ended a mini East Coast tour this winter on Valentine’s Day in Vermont. The setlist was chalk full of Dead classics with plenty of nods to the day of love such as “Good Lovin'” and “They Love Each Other.” JRAD was even slipped in a few love notes into “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “Althea” with Sam Cooke’s “Cupid” and Zep’s “All of My Love” teases.

Where yesterday’s show was one Tom Hamilton short of a JRAD, today’s jam has Jon Shaw on bass as Dave was touring with Ween.

Listen to Dead and Company’s Final Summer 2016 Show in Mountainview – 7/30/2016 HD Audio Capture

Dead and Company ended their Summer 2016 tour on a high note in Mountainview, CA. The show started off with a Help on the Way into Slipknot and then the boys threw everyone a curveball with Shakedown. Then Dead & Co launched into Cassidy which was one of the highlights of the evening. After a SOTM, Me and My Uncle and Brown Eyed Women they finally dropped Franklin’s Tower. Wow.

The second set felt like a late 60s show with Dark Star > Saint Stephen > The Eleven Jam > Saint Stephen to kick it off. Then they busted out some crowd favorites with Terrapin and one final Eyes of the World.

Deadhead and NBA HOFer Bill Walton made a surprise guest appearance on Drums during the second set. The night ended with a two-song encore including Brokedown Palace. What a beautiful end to a beautiful tour.

I can’t help but get a little sad that the tour is over, but Reddit user deadin_tx put things into perspective:

Tours end and tours begin. Thank the universe we have about 20 fine shows to dissect and discuss and then we get more dates. It’s the cycle of life in this community, but it keeps our souls yearning for that show, that run, that tour.
