Not Fade Away

RubenJoe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to the stage, in front of an audience for the first time since the pandemic shut down the live music scene. The last time we saw JRAD was via livestream at the Cap last fall.

JRAD kicked off the first of three nights with the apropos “Not Fade Away.” The band came out swinging on the first song and didn’t let up the rest of the show, despite poor weather. In addition to their command of the Dead catalogue and tasty teases, JRAD treated New Haven to the Neil Young cover “Fuckin’ Up” with a guest appearance from Chris Hartford on guitar and vocals during the encore.

For our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour, we head back to Berkeley, California for the Dead’s finale at the Greek Theatre in 1984.

While the first set has Jerry way down in the mix, the first set in no slouch. The Dead launch into a “Dancing in the Street” into a stunning “Bird Song” to start night three.

The second set kicks off with an unusual Beatles cover of “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road,” and features a great “Uncle John’s Band.” While “Drums” and “Space” usually aren’t stand-outs in my book, this is a journey you don’t want to miss.

To cap off the three night run, the Dead treat Berkeley to a double encore—”Brokedown Palace” and then one final burst of electricity with “Johnny B. Goode.”

For our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour, we go from one historic run to another. This day in 1984, the Dead kicked off a three-night run at the legendary Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA.

Night one of the run was one of the most memorable shows of the 80s for the encore alone—the Dead busted out “Dark Star” for the first time in three years and then would tuck it away for another five until the fall of ’89. Also check out Jerry rage on “CC Rider” on the first set, and an extended “Hell in a Bucket.”

The next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour is Louisville, KY during summer 1990. The Dead played one of the more memorable shows of the tour at Cardinal Stadium on July 6th.

The first set “Sugaree” really gets the party starting. This would be one of Brent’s last shows and he really shines.

The second set opening “China > Rider” got the All the Years Live YouTube series treatment earlier this year. Also, check out the “Standing on the Moon > He’s Gone > Jam” in the second set.

Watch the Grateful Dead’s Last Show at JFK Stadium – 7/7/1989 Video

The Grateful Dead returned to YouTube last night with a classic show from 1989 for their Shakedown Stream series. The latest footage comes from their last show at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia from summer 1989.

While the show before this one in Buffalo was the first to be released from this summer tour, this JFK show definitely rivals it and was given it’s own release about a decade ago at Crimson White and Indigo. Among the standouts from this show is one of the best, if not the best “Blow Away” to close the first set.
