Remembering Jerry: Listen to Jerry Garcia Band Play at The Stone in San Francisco on This Day in 1985 – 8/9/1985 AUD

Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Back by popular demand, we’re extending the We Will Get By Streaming Tour into August. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!

Today, on the saddest day in the Grateful Dead calendar, we continue our We Will Get By Streaming Tour. Jerry Garcia passed away today at the all too young age of 53 on this day, 25 years ago in 1995.

Strangely enough, August 9th is one of the few days of the 365 in the year that the Grateful Dead did not perform a show in their 30 year history. For today’s show, we switch to our second favorite band (or in some cases, our favorite band), the Jerry Garcia Band. Jerry played three August 9s with his band including one in 1985.

Though Jerry was in rough shape before his coma in ’86, this show is definitely worth a listen. Jerry Garcia Band’s tour rolled into San Francisco to play at The Stone on August 9th, 1985. The show includes some beautiful passages from Jerry like his delicate solo in “Simple Twist of Fate.”

I: Cats Under The Stars, Catfish John, Simple Twist Of Fate, Run For The Roses, Deal

II: I’ll Take A Melody, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Gomorrah, Rubin And Cherise, Midnight Moonlight

Watch the Grateful Dead’s Rocking the Cradle and The Vacation Tapes

The Grateful Dead have returned tonight with Shakedown Stream. While most of the streams have been from the late 80s and early 90s, this week’s stream is a gem from 1978—the Dead’s concerts in Giza.

In 1978, the Dead were on fire. The momentum from their historic year of shows in 1977 carried them to one of their wildest destinations—Egypt. The Grateful Dead traveled to their third continent in the fall of 1978. For a string of three nights in September, the Dead set up on the East Side of Sphinx for one of the most historic runs in their history.

Rocking the Cradle is a film compiled from the footage from the last two concerts on September 15 and 16.

Listen to the Grateful Dead Open Record Breaking Summer Jam at Watkins Glen – 7/28/1973 Soundboard

Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!

After the soundcheck to the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen last night, our We Will Get By Streaming Tour continues with the main course—the Dead’s two opening set to the one day festival.

On July 28, 1973, the Grateful Dead joined The Band and The Allman Brothers Band at the Grand Prix Racecourse in Watkins Glen, NY for Summer Jam. The triple bill, behind the efforts of legendary promoter Bill Graham had an eye popping 600,000 attendees which was broke a world record at the time.

The Dead opened the one day festival and were joined by a combination of the other band members for one of the more memorable sequence of sit in jams including “Not Fade Away,” the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

While some say it was a sloppy two sets, others revel in the show’s glory. Either way, it is definitely one of the Dead’s more historic shows and a “must-listen” on our long strange trip this summer.

Listen to the Grateful Dead Deliver a “Comes a Time” for the Ages on This Day in 1976 – 7/17/1976 Soundboard

Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!

Our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour brings us back to the summer of 76. The Grateful Dead continued their six night run at the Orpheum on this day in 1976 with their penultimate show of their run in San Francisco.

This show has many memorable moments, but the standout is the second set “Comes a Time.” The version ranks among the best the Dead have delivered over their 30 year tenure. The extended jam gives way to “Drums” and then the rumble of “The Other One.”

Set 1
Promised Land, Mississippi Half Step, Mama Tried, Deal, Minglewood Blues, Peggy-O, Big River, Sugaree, Johnny B. Goode

Set 2
Samson & Delilah, Comes A Time > Jam > The Other One Jam > Drums > The Other One > Space > Eyes Of The World > Jam > The Other One > Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night
