Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, passed away at the age of 76 yesterday. There is no shortage of superlatives to describe Franklin’s voice, body of work and impact on the history of music.
There have been an outpouring of tributes and payments of respect to Aretha since the news of her passing. One of my favorite’s was from the Late Show’s Stephen Colbert who hosted the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015. Carole King was being honored among other artists that year and none other than the Queen of Soul graced the stage to pay tribute to Carole’s accomplishments.
As Aretha stepped on stage, Colbert turned to someone on the side of the stage and said how he had wished he saw Franklin sing when she was younger and in full-voice. Reflecting on the moment Colbert says “Boy am I stupid.” The performance that followed by a 73 year old Franklin was nothing less than stunning.
Watch in awe as President Barack Obama, First Lady Michele Obama, Carole King and the rest of the Kennedy Center were treated to one of the last great performances from the Queen of Soul.
Thanks to the Late Show for re-sharing the footage from the performance!
