Much has been said about Phish’s night three at Alpine and more phan commentary is likely to come. In a show of so many bust-outs and rarities, it’s hard to believe that the stand-out jam of the show, if not the tour is a song less than a year old.
“Ruby Waves” debuted earlier this year as part of Trey’s Ghosts of the Forest project. The handful of times it was played in the spring and during this summer didn’t prepare anyone for the massive jam that Phish dropped on Alpine.
Reddit user swisspassport gave a spot-on play-by-play of the jam:
Ruby Waves -> Dark -> Dank -> Lighter -> Bliss -> Darker -> Fiery -> Chill -> Happy -> Building -> Troy -> Growl -> Building pt.2 -> Smiles -> Squeals -> Reggae -> Digitech Whammy II 6th Harmony -> Synth Bass -> WII m3rd Harmony -> Dark -> Scary -> Heavy -> Page is Frankenstein -> Space Groove from the Future -> Building pt.3 -> Peaking -> Comedown -> Spaceship Landing -> Close Encounters -> Eerie -> Drill -> Rebuilding -> Fucking Business -> No Joke -> Troy Melting Minds with Delay Runs -> Fucking Business pt.2 -> Machine Gun -> Fast and Furious -> Peaking pt.2 -> Absolute Fucking Rage Fire -> Trey’s Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama -> Space Church -> Siren Screams -> TWIST.
Aside from being one of the best 3.0 jams, Phish also went the distance with Ruby waves clocking in at 38:08 which qualifies the “Ruby Waves” jam for 7th longest jam in phistory.
