An unexpected nugget surfaced on April 1st and to every Phan’s delight, it wasn’t an April fool’s joke. YouTuber Reelife Productions remastered and released some vintage Phish soundcheck footage from back in the 90s.

The clip features Phish playing a rarity entitled “The Pendulum” before their show on 12/7/1990 at Hampshire College. “The Pendulum” represents a tidbit of Phistory that only the most fervent Phish fans would know. Here is some background on the tune compliments of Reelife Productions:

“Once upon a time, Phish played backing music while Zenzilé Madikinea recited revolutionary poetry. Zenzilé studied at Goddard briefly around this time, having been a revolutionary and “troublemaker” in South Africa as a young adult. Zenzilé rallied extensive support for various civil rights causes, urged on by his innate dissatisfaction with the heinous state of the world, always electrifying his supporters with eloquent speech and cadence.”

Thanks again to Reelife Productions for the rare, archival footage. According to the notes on the video, Reelife is sitting on more archival footage from the performance!
