Phish’s spring tour landed them at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on April 17, 2023. Now, I’m not one to throw around words like “epic” or “legendary” lightly, but when it comes to the “Tweezer > Simple” in the second set, well… it’s pretty darn hard not to.
Picture this: the P-fish kick off with “Tweezer”, a tune we all know and love. But this isn’t just any “Tweezer”. This one takes us on a ride from the get-go. It’s like they threw every musical style into a blender and hit ‘puree’. From heavy metal vibes to chill, ambient sounds, from rhythmic grooves to a major-key blowout—it’s all there, and it’s all good. By the time it winds down, you’re left thinking, “What just happened?”
But hang on to your beanies, because Phish isn’t done with us yet. Just when you think they might mellow out and give us all a breather, they launch into “Simple”. But don’t let the name fool you—there’s nothing ‘simple’ about this version. It’s focused and efficient, like a well-oiled machine. It’s the perfect counterpoint to the wild ride of “Tweezer”, showing us another side of Phish’s musical genius.
That “Tweezer > Simple” from the Greek Theatre is one for the books. It’s a shining example of why we love Phish: their ability to take us on a musical journey, their knack for hitting us right in the feels, and their uncanny talent for surprising us, even when we think we know what’s coming next.
Thanks to Phish for sharing the footage!
