Dead and Company kicked off a two-night run at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO last night. John Mayer continued to show off his chops in the second set with one his best Scar>fires yet.
It’s been such a treat see this iteration of the Dead come into their own this summer. Despite the great shows they have been putting on night after night this summer, there are still some haters out there. One of the best responses to the Mayer-haters out there came last night from Reddit user RoboticElephant:
A few short years ago, Bobby collapsed on stage and his health was looking grim. Further was grinding to a halt, Phil was like “I’m done touring,” and the music was coming to a close.
So every single time I see a healthy Bobby step up and jump around like a rockstar, I smile. Every time Mayer lands another lick that nobody thought he was going to ever be able to pull off, I smile. Oteils constant raptor-bobbing and unique approach to a unique position in the Dead make me smile. Mickey and his continuous acid trip make me smile, and Billy’s chops make me smile. Not to forget Jeff, who is probably the guy who came after Vince in an alternate dimension where Jerry got clean and healthy.
The point is, I’m so fuckin’ happy to see this happening, so I’m with you. I say, screw the haters, if they’re still stuck on tour from 1988, then fuck them. This music is here and now. Mayer put on some impossible-to-wear boots and is doing a fine job.
