Watch the Grateful Dead’s “Playing in the Band” in San Francisco in October ’74

The Grateful Dead have returned to YouTube with another installment of All the Years Live. The latest bus stop on the tour is San Francisco during October of 1974.

On October 16th, 1974 the Dead were at the front of their run at the Winterland Ballroom. This version of “Playing in the Band” from that show was included in the Grateful Dead movie. Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux notes about the performance, “By the end of the Europe ’72 tour, Playing In The Band had stretched out to close to 20 minutes, where it would remain (and much longer many nights) for the next two+ years, through the end of 1974. This is the version that appeared in the Grateful Dead Movie and was included in its uncut entirety on the CD soundtrack to the Movie, released on 2004.”

Watch the Grateful Dead’s “Stagger Lee” at the Winterland on NYE in 1978

The Grateful Dead have returned for one more All the Years Live YouTube installment before we bid farewell to 2020. This time, we are transported back to the Winterland Ballroom back on New Year’s Eve in 1978.

Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux has to say about the first set “Stagger Lee” from the closing of Winterland, “Stagger Lee, a Hunter-Garcia take on a classic story song, was played consistently 1978-1995 with the exception of a six year hiatus 1979-1985 (aside from two versions played in August 1982). Its appearance in first sets throughout this era was always a treat.”

Thanks to the Grateful Dead for the footage! Happy New Years! Here’s to a year of great health, happiness and jams!

Watch the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” at Their Farewell Show at the Winterland in ’74

The Grateful Dead are back with another installment of All the Years Live on YouTube. The latest footage brings us back to 10/18/1974 during the Dead’s run of shows at the Winterland before their hiatus.

Dubbed the Farewell Shows, the Dead played “Dark Star” at the run on 10/18/1974. This performance of the Grateful Dead masterpiece would be their last until 12/31/1978. Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux has to say about the performance, “Although played more than 50 times in 1972-1973 combined, Dark Star became a rarity in 1974, played only six times before being shelved until 12/31/78. At the Farewell Shows in October 1974, the Dead played this magnificent, introspective, powerful rendition of their ultimate improvisational vehicle. We were thrilled to locate the 16mm film negative when we were producing the Grateful Dead Movie DVD.”

Watch the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” from Winterland 1974

The Grateful Dead released some more excellent footage earlier this week in their All the Years Live YouTube series. This time, they dug back into the archive to share more footage from October 19th, 1974 at the Winterland.

In addition to “Uncle John’s Band,” the Dead have now released “Scarlet Begonias” from their penultimate show before their hiatus.

Here is what Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux says about the performance, “When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry’s long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this Scarlet Begonias was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song.”

Watch the Grateful Dead’s Historic Closing of Winterland Concert – 12/31/1978 Video

The Grateful Dead made Friday nights something to look forward to again during the pandemic with Shakedown Stream. Last night’s concert was legendary Closing of Winterland show on New Year’s Eve 1978.

While the Grateful Dead had homes on both coasts and at many stops in between, the Winterland in San Francisco was arguably their favorite. The Dead clocked 59 shows at the venue before it closed it’s doors. Jerry and the gang in fact played the final show at the Winterland on New Year’s Even, 1978. The show was one for the ages, lasting nearly five hours and ended so late that the audience was served breakfast at dawn. Fun fact: the Dead were joined by none other than actor Dan Aykroyd for the midnight countown.

The show has been released as a four-disc audio set and as a double-dvd as well. One look at the setlist and you’ll understand why it’s one of the best selling Dead releases.
