Watch Derek Trucks and Elizabeth Lea’s Epic Guitar-Trombone Battle During “Space Captain” in Holmdel

The Outlaw Festival rolled in Holmdel, NJ—less than an hour away from NYC. The line-up for this installment’ of Willie Nelson’s festival included Particle, Greensky Bluegrass, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Sturgill Simpson, Tedeschi Trucks Band and of course, Willie himself.

While Willie is the leader of the festival, he packs these line-ups with plenty of firepower before he even hits the stage. I arrived at the show in time to catch a short but fiery Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real set. Next up was Sturgill Simpson, an unexpected treat for sure. Sturgill scored a Grammy for best country album, but it would be hard to recognize his hard-driving jams as country music.

Tedeschi Trucks Band filled the spot right before Willie and stole the show. The highlight of show came at the end of their set with a rendition of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain.” The cover featured TTB trombonist Elizabeth Lea and Derek Trucks squaring off in a battle.

Watch Dave Matthews Band and Robert Randolph’s Tasty “Cornbread” in Holmdel, NJ

Dave Matthews Band’s summer tour stopped at PNC Banks Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ—just off the Jersey Shore. DMB had a very special guest join them during their show who is a frequent collaborator—Robert Randolph on the pedal steel guitar.

Robert Randolph came out for DMB’s 16th song of the set and busted out “Cornbread” which is a bonus track on the European release of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Randolph jammed with DMB a couple of years ago during their 2016 tour in Chula Vista on “Cornbread” as well.

Randolph’s superior pedal steel skills took center stage during the sit-in as Robert treated Holmdel to a rip-roaring solo.

Watch Gov’t Mule’s Epic “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” in New Jersey

Gov’t Mule rolled into Holmdel, NJ for the second ‘Dark Side of the Mule’ mini-tour with the Avett Brothers and Magpie Salute. After a rocking set from Magpie and a mellow set from the Avett Brothers, the Mule thundered in with a set opening “Thorazine Shuffle.”

After “Banks of the Deep End,” Warren and company launched into the Pink Floyd catalogue for the remainder of the show. “One of these Days” was the perfect palette cleanser and set the stage for a majestic night of Mule flavored Floyd.

While most of Dark Side of the Moon was covered, the Mule threw in other Floyd treats like “Echoes (Part 1)” and a massive “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” set closer. The Avett Brothers, Marc Ford, John Hogg, Ron Holloway and Torbjörn “T-Bone” Andersson all lent their talents at various parts of the set. The back-up singers included Machan Taylor, Mini Carlsson & Sophia Ramos.

Watch Bruce Springsteen’s Surprise Sit-in With Jackson Browne for the Eagles’ “Take It Easy” at Laid Back Festival

The Laid Back Festival, a traveling festival in the spirit of Gregg Allman, hit Holmdel, NJ yesterday. The line-up included Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Peter Wolf, Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul and Jackson Browne.

Bruce did a couple of sit-ins throughout the evening. With Jackson Browne, Bruce came out to a hero’s applause and launched into the Eagles’ classic tune “Take It Easy.” The tune transitioned into the Jackson Browne original, “Our Lady of the Well.”

In addition to the Jackson Browne sit-in, Bruce also played the encore with Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul with Peter Wolf. The super-group played “Freeze Frame,” “It’s Been A Long Time,” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

Watch Willie Nelson and His Son Lukas Pay Tribute to Texas with Smokin’ “Texas Flood” at Outlaw Music Festival

Willie Nelson, one of rock and country’s most iconic stars, is still on the road and kicking at 84 years old. Willie’s son, Lukas is on tour to help out his dad, but from the video, Willie doesn’t need much help. You may remember Lukas as the front man for Promise of the Real who was on the road with Neil Young last year.

Willie was joined last night for an Outlaw Music Festival in Holmdel, NJ. The line-up included Willie, Lukas and the Promise of the Real, Sheryl Crow, Avett Brothers and more.

The recent and impending hurricanes are weighing heavy on everyone’s minds and Willie took the opportunity to pay homage to his home state last night. Lukas and Willie went through a smokin’ rendition of the blues standard “Texas Flood” which was made popular by Stevie Ray Vaughn. While Lukas’ 28 year-old hands navigate the fretboard with ease, Willie shows he’s still got some chops as well.
