My Morning Jacket’s sets were short but oh so sweet at the Bridge School Benefit this year. The set on 10/22 kicked off the Jim James piano-rocker “State of the Art.” MMJ played four more tunes spanning from their albums It Still Moves to their most recent LP, The Waterfall.

To cap off the first night, Jim and MMJ welcomed Neil Young for a beautiful rendition of the Young classic “Helpless.”

For their set on the 23rd, MMJ reprised a couple of the tunes from the first night with the addition of “Circuital,” and “A New Life.” As they did the night before, they welcomed Neil out for one more tune. Neil and MMJ busted out the Neil and Stephen Stills tune “Long May You Run” to end the second night’s set.

Listen to Neil Young’s Sublime Acoustic Bridge School Benefit Sets – 10/22 & 10/23/2016 Full Shows AUD

Neil Young is still rocking hard these days. In addition to a full set each evening, Neil sat in with Metallica, Roger Waters and other acts during the two evenings.

The short, but poignant and beautiful acoustic sets took center stage at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. With a mix of classic tunes, covers and new songs, Neil’s sets were perfect. Neil’s writing and protest spirit are as sharp as ever on tunes like “John Oaks” which is the story of an unwarranted police shooting.

Towards the end of each set, Neil welcomed Nils Lofgren and Willie Nelson for some tunes. Neil’s classic anthem “Rockin’ in the Free World” was a chance for all the artists to come out for one final tune before the set closed.

Neil replayed several of the tunes, but played 15 unique songs in total over the two evenings.

Instant Classic: Watch Roger Waters, Neil Young and Jim James Pay Tribute to Dylan with “Forever Young” at Bridge School Benefit

The annual Bridge School Benefit is always a special occasion filled with amazing music and incredible collaborations. This year was no exception.

In addition to Neil Young sitting in with Metallica, he also joined Roger Waters for a beautiful cover of the Bob Dylan classic “Forever Young.” Jim James from My Morning Jacket also contributed to the spirited acoustic Dylan tribute.

This is exactly what makes the Bridge School Benefit concert so special every year. Wow.

Watch Neil Young Join Metallica for Badass Acoustic “Mr. Soul” at the Bridge School Benefit

You can put that headline on the list of things I thought I would ever write. Heavy metal legends teamed up with the one and only Neil Young last night at the Bridge School Benefit for an acoustic version of the Buffalo Springfield classic “Mr. Soul.”

Metallica performed a nine-song acoustic set, including a lot of acoustic debuts. For the last song of the set, they welcomed Young out for Mr. Soul.

While Metallica and Neil Young sound like an odd pairing, the version rocks.

The Bridge School Benefit concert continues tonight. Let’s cross our fingers for more collaborations like this!
