Temple of the Dog has been continuing to rock America this November. The 90s grunge supergroup made up of members from Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Mother Love Bone released one album back in 1991 and 25 years later have embarked on their first tour, ever.
One of the most surprising aspects of the TOTD shows are the breadth and depth of their covers. At the 11/12 show alone, they covered Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Syd Barrett, The Cure, Free and Jimi Hendrix among other artists. The Jimi Hendrix cover was the biggest treat in my opinion. Instead of opting for one of the Hendrix’s hits, Chris Cornell and crew decided to tackle a more obscure, late-career Hendrix tune, which also happens to be one of my favorites.
A little history on this song: Ament, Cameron, Cornell, and McCready came together under the band name M.A.C.C. to record a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)’ for the tribute album Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix (1993). While they have played it in the studio, this tour marks the first time they are playing it live.
Cornell acknowledges the sensation that Temple of the Dog has created and says “Hopefully we’ll be able to do this more often, so it won’t be so hard to get tickets next time.” If these epic shows continue, let’s all cross our fingers for more dates in the future!
I found and shared the Temple of the Dog show from the night before on YouTube. Check it out!
