Wanee headliners and regulars, Gov’t Mule graced the the Peach Stage Saturday afternoon. With a new album on the horizon, one would expect a lot of new material to be played at the festival, but instead Warren and company treated Wanee to a vintage Mule set.
The Mule played tunes like “Mother Earth” and the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen,” both of which they have been busting out at shows since the mid 90’s. Warren and the gang did have one new track to share, “Revolution Come, Revolution Go”—a hard rocker that reminds me of Mule’s early days. Mule’s performance of “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” at Wanee was it’s debut performance.
Towards the end of the set, former Allman Brothers alumni, Jack Pearson came out for an epic cover of “Freeway Jam.” Mule finished the set off with a beautiful run of “Beautifully Broken (w/ When Doves Cry jams) Effigy > Hey Joe > Folsom Prison Blues > Effigy.”

Newgrass rockers Greensky Bluegrass just finished up a pair of shows in Aspen, CO. With dozens of shows behind them already, 2017 is shaping up to be another epic year for Greensky.
Night two in Aspen was something of a unique show. The Michigan bluegrass act played their latest album, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted in it’s entirety for the first set.
The second set was cover-palooza. They kick the set off with the Allman Brother’s “One Way Out” and set the tone for an epic set of classic covers. Other covers include Clapton’s “After Midnight,” Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved?,” the Grateful Dead’s “Eyes of the World” and “When Doves Cry” among others.

Gov’t Mule continued westward this past weekend with a surprise guest and and surprise opener in San Diego. What was predictable at this point, but oh so anticipated was the encore covers with Charlie Starr.
The Mule opened with an unlikely cover of Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker” that was spacey and a little brooding at times. Warren didn’t waste anytime upping the tempo though.
While there were plenty of originals in the set, the Mule played covers of the Beatles, Freddie BB & Albert King,.Beatles, Grateful Dead, Little Feat and teases of Allman Brothers Band, Prince and The Police. Wow.
All-star drummer Steven “Steve” Ferrone who is currently the drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, came out midway through the set to sit in on a few tunes including “Pack It Up”, “The Thrill is Gone” and “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”
After a monster set, Charlie Starr and Blackberry Smoke bassist Richard Turner came out for gorgeous covers of Grateful Dead’s “Loser” and of Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon.” Steve Ferrone came back out for the “Spanish Moon.” I’ve always loved the way Warren played “Loser.” What a treat!
The Mule seems to be gaining strength with every show they play. This one was incredible!
The stream starts at the encore, but I highly recommend rewinding and starting from the beginning! Thanks to ikepgh for the top-notch recording.
