After a week off, the Grateful Dead kept the music rolling last night with their Shakedown Stream YouTube concert. Last night’s selection came from the fall of 1987 at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

This week’s pre-show with Dave and Gary featured Widepsread Panic bassist Dave Schools and founding member of Circles Around the Sun Adam MacDougall. The conversation centered around Neal Casal and the upcoming tribute to the deceased CATS guitarist. There was an awesome anecdote shared on the show about the time that Neal Casal introduced “Cinnamon Girl” to Derek Trucks for the first time. Neal, shocked that Trucks had never heard the legendary Neil Young jam asked how Trucks was just hearing it for the first time. Trucks responded that his dad didn’t allow Neil Young to be played in the house growing up.

As for the show, this is a great late 80s fall show. Bobby, Jerry and Phil are all on, the entire show. The second set is especially tasty with a “China > Rider” to kick it off and a beautiful “Black Muddy River” encore.

Watch Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Roaring Jazzfest Late Night Show – 5/4/2018 Video

Joining their jam band brethren, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has starting releasing weekly streams to tide us over until live music fills concert venues once again. JRAD released their their first of two shows during Jazzfest 2018.

On May 4th, JRAD set up shop at Mardi Gras World Ballroom for some late-night Jazzfest awesomeness. The set included a ton of teases from Phish to the Allman Brothers Band to Dylan and beyond.

In addition to spreading some much needed good vibes, JRAD is also raising some much needed funds for a local NOLA food bank and their road crew: “New Orleans and Jazzfest has always been a special place for us. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead has checked off the tour circuit (although they do have LOCKN’ later this month), the East Coast and now has been attacking the West Coast with their high-energy Grateful Dead sets. A couple of nights ago, JRAD visited the The Showbox, a classic Seattle venue that is danger of closing and has been getting a lot of support from artists like Pearl Jam and Guns N’ Roses to stay open.

Being the home of grunge music and acts like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, there was a high likelihood of JRAD jamming on a 90s grunge classic. JRAD’s show was sold out, which is even more impressive given that they were competing with hometown heroes Pearl Jam across town. JRAD choose Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” to be the grunge anthem of the night and honor the late Chris Cornell who took his own life last year.

Another highlight of the show came at the end of the first set with a monster “Feel Like A Stranger” that included “Hey Bulldog” (The Beatles), “Frankenstein” (Edgar Winter Group) and “Voodoo Chile” (Jimi Hendrix) jams and teases.

Remembering Art Neville: Watch the Dead & Neville Brothers Ring in ’88

Art Neville, founding member of The Neville Brothers and The Meters passed away this week at the age of 81. Art, a.k.a. Poppa Funk who was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with The Meters last year has left a lifetime of music behind as his legacy.

The mark that Art, his brothers and bandmates left on music is larger than life. The signature NOLA sound can be traced back to Art and his work with The Neville Brothers and The Meters.

Later in the 80s, The Neville Brothers reunited and toured with the Dead. On New Years’ Eve the Brothers sat in with the Dead to ring in the new year and jammed on classics like “Man Smart/Woman Smarter,” “Iko Iko,” “Banana Boat Song,” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

The concert at the Oakland Coliseum was televised that year for all to share in the awesome collaboration.

Art’s brother Cyril told Relix earlier this year that Art deserve’s all the credit for The Neville Brothers and The Meters—“No Art Neville, no Meters, no Neville Brothers. I could go on and on. It all circles back to Art Neville.”

RIP Art.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is nearly half way through their 2019 winter tour. One of their first stops in the tour was a two-night stand in St. Louis at The Pageant.

On the second night of the Pageant run, JRAD treated St. Louis to a towering “Morning Dew.” What was interesting about this Dew was that Russo, Hamilton and the band tucked a “Terrapin Station” neatly into the middle of it. According to the show notes, this was the first time JRAD split “Morning Dew.” If you ask me, it was a beautiful and successful experiment.
