Listen to JJ Grey’s Magnificent Solo Set at the Beacon Theater

Before Tedeschi Trucks Band took the stage for their sold out fourth show during their Beacon residency, JJ Grey of JJ Grey and Mofro took the stage with just a chair and his guitar.

JJ Grey, a native of Florida narrowly missed Hurricane Michael and left the day before one of the worst storms in U.S. history ravished the Florida panhandle. With just a guitar and a microphone, JJ didn’t miss the opportunity to share his usual banter with a sold out Beacon Theater.

JJ’s set was only seven songs deep, but he made every second count on stage. You can tell how grateful Grey was for the opportunity to play at the Beacon ahead of TTB.

04 Lochloosa

Listen to Mofro and the 9:30 Club Belt Out “Hey Jude” in D.C. – 10/20/2017 Full Show AUD

JJ Grey and Mofro is finishing up a mainly east coast tour that extended through all of October. This week, one of the southern funk band’s last stops was the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.

The 14-song set spanned the band’s career from when they were originally Mofro to the present day. One of the notable additions to Mofro’s sets this fall tour is a rendition of The Beatles’ anthem “Hey Jude.” One of the hallmarks of a Mofro show is JJ’s banter. JJ introduces “Hey Jude” as a song that he hasn’t “heard” until recently. He goes on to explain that he really didn’t pay attention to the inescapable tune until the version from Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett.

At the end of “Hey Jude,” the band goes silent and the entire 9:30 Club joins in for the remainder of the chorus.

Listen to JJ Grey and Mofro’s Soulful Homecoming Set at Wanee – 4/21/2017 Full Show AUD

Florida natives JJ Grey and Mofro made a homecoming of sorts last week at Wanee. An audibly excited JJ Grey was giddy that he just down the road from his home and even more excited to have his band back together for the first time in nearly two months.

Always the showman, JJ dawned a suit on stage in the warm Florida afternoon but there was nothing formal about this set. Mofro’s gritty and soulful blend of funk and blues is beautifully captured in this recording.

Aside from reading like a greatest hits setlist with the “Lochloosa” opener, JJ shared plenty of stories and reflections on Florida, life and even a Levon Helm quote. If you haven’t been to a Mofro show, JJ’s banter is one of the best parts of the show.

Listen to Southern Soul Assembly Bring Their Acoustic Soul to New Orleans – 3/5/2017 Full Show AUD

Southern rock all-stars, Anders Osbourne, JJ Grey, Luther Dickinson and Marc Broussard have teamed up once again to tour as the Southern Soul Assembly. Listen to these musicians trade in their hard-rockin’, foot-stompin, guitar-slingin’ styles for some good ole stripped down southern soul. This show was especially significant for Anders as it was a homecoming of sorts.

The format of these shows affords each musician to give introductions to songs and tell stories. If you have ever been to a Mofro show, hearing JJ Grey tell stories is one of the best parts of the concert!

Halfway through the set, special guests Alvin Youngblood Hart (guitar) & Ivan Neville (keys) join the assembly for the remainder of the show.

The group plays originals from their respective repertoires and sprinkles in a cover or two. The most notable cover of the evening was the last song of the set—Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.”
