It’s Friday and that means that Shakedown Stream is back with another Grateful Dead concert. Much to our chagrin, Shakedown Stream will reportedly become more infrequent than weekly as it has been.
This week’s stream brings us to Brent Mydland’s last tour during the summer of 1990. The Dead rolled into Tinley Park right outside of Chicago to play three nights at the World Amphitheatre, with the run kicking off on 7/21.
The highlight to look out on this one is Brent’s solo during the first set “Friend of the Devil.”

Thanks to the Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Every day in the month of July, we’ll feature a vintage recording from the Dead. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive! The next stop on our We Will Get By Streaming Tour is the summer of 1972. It’s hard to find a bad Dead show from 1972. It’s also equally hard to find a bad Dead show in Portland, OR. This show is highlighted by one of the most massive and magnificent “The Other One” jams the Dead ever delivered. Also there are noteworthy versions of “He’s Gone,” “China > Rider” and “Wharf Rat” from the second set. Set 1 Set 2 Thanks to Charlie Miller for the soundboard. Got the summertime blues? After the Dead’s historic European tour in 72, they would come back and play a single show out west at the Hollywood Bowl, which would also be Pigpen’s final. A month later, the boys ventured out east for a pair of gigs—one in Hartford and the second in Jersey City on July 18th, 1972. The set is a smoker from start to finish. The first set busts out of the gates with a ton of energy and carries through the entire three sets. Fireworks were set off at the end of the first set during “Casey Jones” and through the first set break. The main course of the evening came during the second set with meaty 27 minute “Dark Star” that crashed into a beautiful “Comes a Time.” This is early 70s Dead at it’s best. For our next stop on the We Will Get By Streaming Tour, we go from one historic run to another. This day in 1984, the Dead kicked off a three-night run at the legendary Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. Night one of the run was one of the most memorable shows of the 80s for the encore alone—the Dead busted out “Dark Star” for the first time in three years and then would tuck it away for another five until the fall of ’89. Also check out Jerry rage on “CC Rider” on the first set, and an extended “Hell in a Bucket.” Set 1 The Grateful Dead have joined in on the fun and started a weekly stream on YouTube. The series, titled Shakedown Stream will share both your favorite concerts and never seen before footage of shows. Last night, the series debuted with Truckin’ Up to Buffalo—the Dead’s much celebrated July 4th show from their 1989 tour. Sandwiched in-between shows in Foxboro and Philly, the Buffalo show was definitely one to remember—worthy of DVD, 2-CD and 5-LP box set releases. Along side the livestream of the re-airing of the show, was a fundraiser for COVID-19 related charities. The stream raised over 20k in a single night—not too bad for the rebroadcast of a 30 year old show!
