Remembering Jerry: Listen to Jerry Garcia Band Play at The Stone in San Francisco on This Day in 1985 – 8/9/1985 AUD

Got the summertime blues? Go on a long, strange tour with me through time. Back by popular demand, we’re extending the We Will Get By Streaming Tour into August. Tune in on YouTube and join the chat as we explore the wonders of summer tours past. We will get by, we will survive!

Today, on the saddest day in the Grateful Dead calendar, we continue our We Will Get By Streaming Tour. Jerry Garcia passed away today at the all too young age of 53 on this day, 25 years ago in 1995.

Strangely enough, August 9th is one of the few days of the 365 in the year that the Grateful Dead did not perform a show in their 30 year history. For today’s show, we switch to our second favorite band (or in some cases, our favorite band), the Jerry Garcia Band. Jerry played three August 9s with his band including one in 1985.

Though Jerry was in rough shape before his coma in ’86, this show is definitely worth a listen. Jerry Garcia Band’s tour rolled into San Francisco to play at The Stone on August 9th, 1985. The show includes some beautiful passages from Jerry like his delicate solo in “Simple Twist of Fate.”

I: Cats Under The Stars, Catfish John, Simple Twist Of Fate, Run For The Roses, Deal

II: I’ll Take A Melody, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Gomorrah, Rubin And Cherise, Midnight Moonlight

UPDATE: Watch Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Jimmy Fallon’s Classic Rock Medley Encore at the Cap – 2/23/2020 AUD

Thanks to Keith Antaya and Keith Litzenberger for the recording.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead wrapped up their three night run at the Capitol Theatre. After a couple of tricks for night one and two, JRAD had one more card up their sleeve for the run finale.

After two sets of classic Dead, a couple of Jerry Garcia Band tunes and a Dire Straits set two opener, JRAD returned to the stage for the encore. But not before Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon rushed out on the stage and proceeded to get on his hands and knees and bow down to the band.

Chris Harford also joined JRAD and Fallon for the encore which was a giant 12 minute classic rock medley. The medley started off with Neil Young’s “Fuckin’ Up” which is write in Fallon’s wheelhouse. Mid-song, Fallon who was donning a Capitol Theatre hoodie, downs his beverage, finally wrestles the microphone free and takes center stage for the chorus.

Fallon leads Harford and JRAD into Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” and The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” before returning to Young’s “Fuckin’ Up.” While the sit-in won’t win any awards, it was a fun way to end three nights of JRAD at the Cap!
