Widespread Panic’s annual Mexican excursion, Panic en la Playa concluded last night in Riviera Maya at the Hard Rock Hotel. The four nights included four nights of Widespread Panic, afternoon sets and late night shows by Jerry Jospeh, Marcus King, Big Something and others.

One of the highlights of Panic en la Playa is always delivered by the Playa Allstars during their late night sets. This year’s Playa Allstars lineup included George Porter Jr. on bass and vocals, Ivan Neville on keyboards and vocals, Eric Krasno on guitar and vocals, Cyril Neville on percussion and vocals, Terence Higgins on drums, Cochemea Gastelum on saxophone
and Nicki Bluhm on vocals.

Krasno, Porter Jr. and the rest of the Playa Allstars covered everything from Fleetwood Mac to Nirvana during their first late night set.

The George Porter Jr. Trio has a string of shows down in NOLA this week. This past weekend the Trio was at the intimate Maple Leaf Bar with the very special guest, Eric Krasno.

Krasno had a break in his schedule with Circles Around the Sun and flew to NOLA to join George Porter and his trio.

After Krasno joined for the first set, Chris Atkins joined for the second set on guitar.

Warren Haynes got the gang back together again for another benefit show for Debra of America for EB research. Joining Warren at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY was George Porter Jr on bass, Joe Russo on drums, John Medeski on keys, and Karl Denson on the sax.

Entitled One Night Only Again, the quintet jammed on a selection of covers by bands including Allman Brothers Band, Cream, the Rolling Stones and more.

Listen to Vidacovich, Porter and Krasno Jam on “Sugaree” at the Maple Leaf in NOLA – 4/25/2019 AUD

While Jazz Fest grabs all of the headlines, some of the best music happens late night in NOLA after or leading up to the two Jazz Fest weekends. The Maple Leaf is home to some serious jam sessions featuring a NOLA staple—drummer Johnny Vidacovich.

On Thursday, April 25th Vidacovich invited George Porter Jr. and Eric Krasno to jam for a pair of sets. While there was plenty of improved jams, Porter and Krasno treated the Maple Leaf to a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” to close the show.

Donnie Sundal and Tony Hall made an appearance in the second set to lend their vocals on a pair of songs.

After the Widespread Panic shows, the party raged on at Panic en la Playa eight with a killer line-up of late night shows. On the night of the 28th, the Playa Allstars assembled and delivered funk on the beach early into the morning.

The Playa Allstar line-up included George Porter Jr. on bass and vocals, Eric Krasno on guitar and vocals, Ivan Neville on keyboards and vocals, Cyrille Neville on percussion and vocals, Mark Mullins on trombone, Cochemea “Cheme” Gastelum on saxophone, and Terrence Higgins on drums.

The Playa Allstars jammed on the Dead and Nirvana for their first performance. In the second late night appearance the Allstars covered the Dead, Neil Young, The Funky Meters and more.
