Warren Haynes’ headlining The Last Waltz 40 Tour is in the middle of it’s second leg this spring. The tour pays homage to the final concert of The Band by bringing together an outstanding group of musicians to play the greatest hits of The Band. The Last Waltz 40 Tour website reports that the last three dates of the tour have been canceled due to scheduling conflicts, but still may be made up at a later date. The Chicago concert this past Sunday may be the last show of the tour.
The musicians that have joined Warren Haynes on the tour include Dr. John, Jamey Johnson, Don Was, Terence Higgins, Danny Louis, An All-Star Horn Section Led By Mark Mullins Featuring The Original Horn Arrangements Of Allen Toussaint, Cyril Neville, Dave Malone, And Bob Margolin. The most notable guest of all has been original The Band member Garth Hudson on the keys.
This footage from the side of the stage captures the 79 year old Garth Hudson’s beautiful keyboard solo into The Band’s classic “The Weight.” The aging keyboardist, hunched over his piano doesn’t have the appearance of a rock star, but his fingers are more capable than musicians half his age. Garth’s deft and melodic solo transitions beautifully into “The Weight.” It’s so great to see Garth still playing these iconic rock songs after so many years.
Thanks to Nunu Zomot for the awesome front row footage.
