South Park the movie was released, Pokemon fever swept the nation and fear of Y2K gripped the world. The year was 1999 and the summer also saw an attempt to recreate the summer of love.
Woodstock ’99 had the making of a killer festival with headliners like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine and dozens of others acts. Despite the stellar commercial success (400,000 in attendance), the four day festival was plagued by extreme heat, inadequate facilities and violence.
One of the more jam band orientated acts at Woodstock ’99 was Dave Matthews Band. DMB, enjoying a decade of major growth and success, was one of the headliners on the East Stage on Saturday afternoon.
While the footage of Woodstock ’99 has been widely available for years, thanks to The Savage Shiba and Gigapixel AI, we get a first glimpse of DMB’s Woodstock performance upscaled to HD. The technology, while still in it’s infancy creates truly stunning results. I predict that we will see AI-aided video of vintage concerts will start popping up everywhere in the years to come.
