Just when you thought Christmas Jam was over (full disclosure—there is plenty more AUDs to come), Asheville got hit by a freak snow storm and many of the musicians were stuck in North Carolina for an extra day. Leave it to Warren to round up some new and old friends that got stranded for a surprise pop-up show at the Orange Peel. Dave Grohl and Audley Freed were among the friends Warren recruited for the surprise show.

Local newspaper photographer and journalist, Garret K. Woodward was lucky enough to be in attendance.

So, yeah, one of the greatest concert experiences of my entire life literally fell into my lap today. After being snowed in following a raucous 30th anniversary of #ChristmasJam this weekend, #DaveGrohl and #WarrenHaynes decided to do a one-off show out-of-nowhere tonight at the #OrangePeel in #Asheville #NorthCarolina. In this random photo snap of mine right now, you have guitarist Audley Freed from #TheBlackCrowes to the left, then Grohl on drums and Haynes on lead guitar. They were playing a cover of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” by the late #TomPetty. As I posted this photo, Grohl’s band then came out and did a #Nirvana tribute with Haynes of “All Apologies.” I spent the next five minutes trying not to cry in pure melodic happiness. Right now? Grohl just grabbed his guitar and microphone with #GovtMule backing him and is doing a rendition of “Breakdown.” Is this real life?! Much love, y’all.

Garret, I think we all would agree that seeing Warren Haynes and Dave Grohl jam on Nirvana’s “All Apologies” at a pop-up post-Christmas Jam show would be one of the greatest concert experiences ever.

One of the highlights of the show was seeing Warren wail on Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You” with Grohl behind the drum kit.

As Garret mentioned in his Instagram post, the supergroup also jammed on some Tom Petty tunes.

Watch Gov’t Mule and Audley Freed Jam on “Simple Man” & “Statesboro Blues” at Island Exodus 9

Gov’t Mule and friends made their annual pilgrimage to Jewel Paradise Cove Resort & Spa, Runaway Bay, Jamaica for Island Exodus. This past weekend marked Mule’s 9th Island Exodus.

The first night on the island, Mule brought out their old friend Audley Freed and plenty of classic tunes including this smokin’ version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.” The cover came in an absolute monster second set that included “Southern Man,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Afro Blue,” and “Sad and Deep As You” among other classic tunes.

As the set evolved, Mule was joined by Ron Holloway and the Better Half Singers on tunes like “Brown Sugar.”

Classic Jam: Watch Govt Mule & Audley Freed Jam on “Simple Man” at Another One For Woody

Founding Gov’t Mule bassist Allen Woody passed away in August of 2000 and Warren Haynes quickly assembled one of the greatest tributes to his dear friend the following month, dubbed One for Woody. 10 years after Woody’s passing and the original One for Woody, Warren and Gov’t Mule hosted Another One for Woody to celebrate the bassist’s life and spirit.

The second concert was every bit of awesome as the first and featured sets from Warren, North Mississippi Allstars, Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers Band. All sets were laden with guests including the Gov’t Mule set. Towards the end of the Mule set a couple of frequent Mule collaborators including Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Artemis Pyle on Drums, Audley Freed on guitar and Robert Kerns on bass came out for the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic.

Warren Haynes covers hundreds (if not thousands) of songs on stage, but few are infused with the passion and intensity that “Simple Man” is. With Audley Freed doubling on lead guitar, Mule and friends launch “Simple Man” into the stratosphere.

Instant Classic: Gov’t Mule and Marcus King Unleash an Epic “Simple Man” in Jamaica

Imagine this: two of the best blues guitar slingers in the world team up for one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s best songs on the beach in Jamaica. Who wouldn’t want to be witness that?

Gov’t Mule continued their Island Exodus in Jamaica last night with more killer perforamnces and guest appearances. As with last night, the guests started coming out in the second set, but unfortunately the set was cut short because of rain. Fortunately Marcus King came out to jam with Gov’t Mule on “Simple Man” before the rain.

Marcus and Warren are two souls connected on this tune. Their guitar playing is simply brilliant and the guitar duel that the two have at the end of song is about as good as it gets.

After a rain delay, Mule and fiends continued to rock Runaway Bay before the rain came again ultimately claimed the night.

Watch Gov’t Mule & Blackberry Smoke’s Blazing “Southern Man – Simple Man” Encore in Boston

Ahead of their extended set at the Peach, Gov’t Mule stopped in Boston for a regularly schedule tour stop. The encore was anything but regular.

After unleashing a 20-minute “Cortez the Killer” encore in Asbury Park, the Mule was up to the challenge for another not-be-forgotten encore.

Watch Blackberry Smoke join Mule on a very windy stage for cover of the quintessential classic rock songs, “Southern Man” and “Simple Man.”
