After years of speculation, months of anticipation and five “warm-up” gigs, Phish played night one of thirteen at MSG as part of their Baker’s Dozen run in NYC. There were some notable Phish shows in the last couple of weeks leading up to the run and the hype is running high on what the unprecedented MSG run will have in store.
When Phish decides to theme something, they go all in. The Baker’s Dozen donut theme has been layered on tickets, merch and even their setlist. Last night they kicked off the show with a debut of Junior Senior’s “Shake Your Coconuts” and wouldn’t you know it—they gave out free coconut donuts at the show. It’s a safe bet that they’ll do this for every show of the run. How can you not love these guys?
The rumor that Phish was going to go the entire summer without a repeated song in their set list was quickly crushed with “Martian Monster” in the second slot of the first set.
One of the biggest treats of the first set was a great cover that Phish reprised from their Halloween show last year—David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.” Thanks to the trusty LazyLightning55a for the footage of the Bowie cover.
Live Phish is offering streams of the whole run and are giving phans the first song of each set for free. Trey and the boys came barreling out the gate for the second set with “Tweezer.” The fan favorite slowly built steam through the jam and ended with a high-soaring jam. Not a bad way to start a set at all.
