Warren Haynes just ended his historic Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tour in NYC earlier this week and has already hit the road with Gov’t Mule to start a 36-stop late-summer and fall tour. And oh yea, the Mule announced that they are going to be filling in for the ailing Gregg Allman at the Peach Festival tomorrow for an extended set. Warren is undoubtedly the hardest working musician in the rock business.
After two sets of classic Mule tunes, Warren brought the Mule back out with Blackberry Smoke guitarist Charlie Starr and keyboardist Brandon Still for the ultimate encore song-“Cortez the Killer.” The Neil Young classic is one of Warren’s favorite tunes that he busts out on special occasions like with Dave Matthews Band in Central Park or with the late Talking Heads and Parliament-Funkadelic member Bernie Worrell. I was fortunate to catch a Cortez encore after a Mountain Jam set 5 years ago or so.
After about two minutes of jamming, Warren strums the first chords of Cortez at the 2 minute mark – queue the goosebumps. Warren and Charlie trade guitar solos through-out the rendition and then the crowd helps Warren out with the ending “Dancing on the water, Cortez. Cortez” before launching into the last section of the song which was loud and glorious.
Check out the full setlist here. Thanks to Sean Roche for the great fan footage!
