Festivals not only are a great way to see a ton of artists in a few days, but also see once in a lifetime collaborations. The Newport Folk Festival yielded one of those last week.
At the end of Warren Haynes’ solo acoustic set, Jason Isbell, Lukas Nelson and Jonathan Wilson were welcomed to the stage. The four singer songwriters, with guitars in hand paid homage to some of the best songwriters of generations past.
The first tune the quartet played to the hushed crowd was Crosby, Stills Nash and Young’s “Find the Cost of Freedom.” Warren and company segued into Bob Dylan’s “Master of War” to end the set.
Warren sat in with Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band later that afternoon at Newport for another cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young—”Almost Cut My Hair.”
