Citi Field in NYC has become a staple of the Dead and Company summer tour. Two summer’s ago, Bobby and the crew hit the New York Met’s home field on June 15 and June 16.

In anticipation of the Fall Fun Run kicking off next week at MSG in NYC, Dead & Co’s official YouTube channel released some excellent footage from the 6/16/2018 show including “Comes a Time” and the “Estimated Prophet” from the 6/15/2018 show. Each track is complete with notes from Grateful Dead newsletter editor and Tales from the Golden Road co-host Gary Lambert.

Lambert’s notes on Oteil taking the lead on “Comes a Time”: One of the loveliest songs Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter created during their extraordinary partnership, “Comes A Time” entered the Grateful Dead’s repertoire in late 1971 and appeared as the closing track on Jerry Garcia’s third solo studio album, “Reflections” (with the Dead as backing band) in 1976. Oteil Burbridge took on the song as a lead vocal vehicle with Dead & Company during the summer of 2017, and quickly made it his own, as the beautiful performance here will attest.

Gary’s performance notes on the 2nd set Estimated: It was the opening track on the Grateful Dead’s 1977 studio album “Terrapin Station,” but “Estimated Prophet,” as was so often the case, found its fullest expression in live performance. The Bob Weir/John Barlow composition depicts a certain kind of character commonly seen in the post-Summer-of-Love milieu of Northern California – a guy with delusions of clairvoyant and messianic powers who’s certain that things are “gonna be just like they say” (“they” being the voices in his head). The musical setting – a minor-key reggae-inflected feel over a tricky 7/4 rhythm – sets an appropriately unsettling mood, which is relieved here and there by the soaring refrain of “California!” The result is a song that somehow feels ominous and uplifting all at once.
