After a smokin’ night one, Dead and Company were back at it for night two with a very special guest in what is their last scheduled gig of the year. Branford Marsalis, jazz saxophonist who is widely considered to be the most respected living U.S. jazz instrumentalist, was Dead & Co’s accompaniment for the second set and encore.

Marsalis is not a stranger to the Grateful Dead catalogue.  Branford jammed with Jerry and the rest of the Dead a handful of times throughout the nineties. Branford was just 29 years old when he joined the Dead at the invitation of Phil Lesh at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. At 58, Branford is a wiser, richer and more accomplished musician that can jam better than ever.

Bobby and the boys kept the first set nice and loose, setting everyone up for a jazzy second set. For the second set, Branford and Dead & Co treated LOCKN’ to a couple of classic Dead tunes that Branford left his mark on 28 years ago—”Bird Song” and “Eyes of the World.”

Branford came out for the encore as well and bid LOCKN’ fare thee well with Dead & Co for the final time this year with “Brokedown Palace,” “US Blues” and “Ripple.”

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, hot off their Red Rocks show, headed east to make their annual pilgrimage to LOCKN’. The four-day festival features two late-nights sets from JRAD, the first being last night at 11:00 PM to shutdown the first day.

LOCKN’ announced at the last minute that they had teamed up with Ben and Jerry’s and Airstream to provide a FREE webcast of the festival. The coverage yesterday started in the early evening. Fast forward to 4:54:45 to get to the JRAD set. After “Easy Wind,” their is a brief commercial, but the concert footage should resume afterwards.

And speaking of “Easy Wind,” if that Hamilton guitar solo at the end doesn’t melt your face, I don’t know what will!

Listen to Dead & Company’s Transcendent Show in Oregon – 6/30/2018 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company’s summer tour has made it out West and it has been a glorious leg of the tour. After an amazing show at The Gorge, Dead & Co set up shop at Autzen Stadium for what Oteil described as one of the best shows of the tour:

“Confession: I previously thought my favorite place to play with @deadandcompany was Alpine Valley. I had always heard about how great those #gratefuldead shows were. But last night in Eugene, OR was something different.

It was like some kind of GD nerve center. Like the “Old Growth Forest” of Deadheads. I’m not sure how to describe it but it was a new high for me and it revealed an even deeper level of the love this particular fanbase has to offer.

And I say this having just had another transcendent night at The Gorge so you know it must have been SERIOUS at Autzen Stadium last night.”

The second set in Eugene was surreal. The “Dark Star,” the second appearance of “The Eleven” and “Morning Dew” are all worth a listen. Scratch that—the whole show is worth a listen.

Watch Phil Lesh and Friends’ ‘Dead Blues’ Finale at Terrapin Crossroads – 6/10/2018 Full Show Video

Phil Lesh and a deep line-up of friends finished up a three night run at Terrapin Crossroads. The first of three ‘Dead Blues’ shows at Terrapin featured a great classic Grateful Dead setlist filled with Pig Pen era favorites.

Phil’s line-up for the show included Luther & Cody Dickinson, John Medeski, Anders Osborne, and Nicki Bluhm. The third night featured some classic Dead, but was a more traditional Phil Lesh and Friends set over all.

Listen to Dead and Company’s Monster Second Set in Atlanta – 6/8/2018 Full Show AUD

Dead and Company made their way down to Atlanta to play at the Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood earlier this week. While Phil and a killer group of friends were warming up on the West Coast, Weir, Mayer and the rest of Dead & Co were piecing together one of their finest shows of the tours.

Mayer teased on Instagram before the show that Dead & Co were going to bust out a rarity for Atlanta. ATL had to wait until the second set before Mayer and the crew busted out “All Along the Watchtower.” But it was well worth the wait. In fact, the entire second set was well worth the wait.
