Southern rockers Blackberry Smoke took an early slot at the Wanee Festival this year and played on 4/20 (Thursday.) Despite being one of the first acts, Blackberry Smoke was eager to please, pumping out a 25-song setlist. Fresh off a 35-day trip to Europe, the Atlanta natives were happy to be back and rocking in the south.
The majority of the set was originals, but Charlie Starr and the rest of Smoke managed to fit in some high quality covers. The “Promised Land” opener was a nice tribute to the late Chuck Berry and a fitting way to kick off a rocking set. Other notable covers included The Grateful Dead’s “Ramble On Rose” and Little Feat’s “Don’t Bogart That Joint.”
What would a set at Wanee be without a sit in? Gregg Allman’s son Devon Allman was on hand and lent his guitar talents towards the end of the set for a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” After the Stones cover, Devon stayed out and filled his dad shoes in the Blackberry Smoke original “Free on the Wing” which features Gregg Allman on the 2016 album Like an Arrow.
