While Phish was raging down at 32nd and 8th, Gov’t Mule was having a party of their own on the Upper West Side (74th and Broadway) on New Year’s Eve. Mule capped off a two-night run at the Beacon Theater with a couple of friends and an absolute monster setlist.
The Mule has historically put on a musical costume for NYE at the Beacon. This year, they structured the setlist around a transportation theme. Six of the songs they played had “train” in the title and that doesn’t include songs that heavily feature trains like the Grateful Dead’s “Casey Jones.” Warren and company also through in a variety of other traveling tunes including Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam,” Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath” and The Door’s “Roadhouse Blues.”
Never one to deliver a skimpy show, Gov’t Mule posted a 37 song setlist to help ring in the new year! To help them with the classic rock songbook second set, the Mule was joined by Jackie Greene and Shawn Pelton. Later during the encore, Warren welcome Jimmy Vivino and Corky Lang to help out on some tunes to close out the show.
