After a few weak hiatus, the Dead made their way to the East Coast after a successful midwest leg of the winter tour. On March 15, 1973 the Dead kicked off two nights at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. These two shows, which Bill Graham billed as A Swell Dance Concert, are significant for a couple of reasons. March 15, 1973 marks the Dead’s first concert after Ron “Pigpen” McKernan’s untimely death on March 8th. It also marks a happier occasion—Phil Lesh’s 33rd birthday. 50 years later and Phil is still playing birthday gigs!
