Bob Weir and Wolf Bros finished their inaugural tour last Monday night at the Beacon Theater in NYC. Bobby’s new band included Jay Lane on drums and a barefoot Don Was on the upright bass. The trio was often joined by guests and the finale last night was full of surprises.
The party got started with a grooving “The Music Never Stopped” in the first set. Bob segued into “Easy Answers” and the night’s first guest, Steve Kimock emerged from the shadows. A mini horns section including Kenny Brooks and Reggie Pittman came out for a spirited “Black Throated Wind” and sat in on songs through the rest of the two sets.
The last guest of the night, Tal Wilkenfeld came out to jam on “Scarlet Begonias” and other tunes throughout the evening. Tal is a young bassist that is talented beyond her years. At only 31 she has already played alongside Jeff Beck, Prince, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock and Mick Jagger.
Bobby opened the second set with a ballad, which he warned was a bad idea, but on Monday night it was warmly welcomed. “The Other One” was teased several times before finally rearing it’s head towards the end of the second set. One of the highlights of the evening was Bobby taking the lead on “Days Between.”
Weir and Wolf Bros ended the evening with a double encore including “Ripple” and “Brokedown Palace”—a perfect way to end a beautiful night.
